Chrysanthemum Arabesque

Listen to the smell

Yachimun pottery has a great number of natural plant patterns, and the arabesque pattern, which is common all over the world, is often painted with a unique Okinawan touch. The arabesque pattern is considered to be auspicious, as it represents prosperity and longevity, as it has a strong life force and grows like a vine without interruption.

The vines are strung together like a sash, and the on-readings of vine and sash can be pronounced man or tai. This, combined with the word "mandai" (longevity), is said to represent the family's prosperity and longevity for all generations.

Dot

Tenuchi

A pattern made by placing dots on Yachimun plates and bowls. Unlike polka dots, they are not evenly placed but are placed freely. There are single-color patterns and multi-colored Sansai patterns.

Brush

Hakeme

Hakeme is a technique of applying decorative clay with a brush. White decorative clay is mainly used, and the technique of applying the white clay all over is common. It is said that it originally started as a way to decorate black clay, which has a high iron content, with a white coating. However, most hakeme techniques only apply the white coating to certain parts, giving it a different feel from kohiki, which applies the white coating entirely.

Available in three varieties: Oribe, Ruri, and Ame

Ingar

It is a technique that is often used in Yachimun pottery, where a mold of a pattern of flowers or plants is pressed onto the surface of the pottery. Also, "hana" means "pattern." There are many pottery techniques with "hana" in their names that originated in China.

A technique unique to Okinawa is the flower pattern. This is done by splitting a bamboo tube about one inch long vertically, just short of the joint, and pushing a suitable piece of bamboo into the center, which opens up into a rounded tip. When this is dipped in paint or colored glaze and pressed onto the glaze, a flower shape is created. Afterwards, a different color is applied to the center with a brush to complete the work.
